Business Babe: The Blush Label

Two sisters, two styles, one colorful vision. Christie and Mary own The Blush Label, a stylish home fabrics boutique. Inspired by the beach, Puerto Rico, and their own personal styles, Christie and Mary have designed the perfect colorful touches to any home.

When and why did you decide to start The Blush Label?

Mary: We incorporated in July 2012 after making a trip to Puerto Rico to visit our father's side of the family. The colors on that island are so beautiful and we wanted to bring them into our homes. Once we were able to get the logistics together of starting a business, we sat down, started designing and eventually The Blush Label was launched in April 2014.

What was your background in and how did it prepare you for being an entrepreneur?

Christie: I grew up figure skating, and from a very young age designed each and every one of my competition & practice dresses. I would draw them while sitting in class (clearly not paying attention as I should have been!) and my mother would make the patterns from scratch and somehow bring my designs to life.

Having a business partner can be tricky, how did you and yours meet and how do you balance your roles?

Mary: We're sisters so working together came naturally for us! Of course since we are sisters, we fight like sisters too, but it's only ever because one of us is really passionate about a certain product or launch and we want it to be the best for our customers. We work great together and have a deep understanding of each other, which is why we've been able to bring our business to place where it is and where it's going. I couldn't ask for a better business partner -- Christie is incredibly creative and does an amazing job bringing The Blush Label to life.

Where do you find inspiration?

Christie: I find a lot of inspiration in nature, music, and at the beach. We came up with some great ideas after visiting the Amalfi Coast, and our family in Puerto Rico last year. And sometimes I'll go over to Duke University and walk through Sarah P. Duke Gardens and draw from the flowers and plants there.

What's been your biggest challenge? Greatest success?

Mary: Our biggest challenge and greatest success was going to Atlanta Market -- there was a ton of preparation (and a lot of pressure on both of us) but it was worth it! Not only was it great for business, but we learned a lot and really listened to how the market responded -- that was important to us.

Favorite product on your site?

Christie: That's a hard one because I genuinely love everything we've designed so far. I'm going to have to go with the Pineapple Glasses because I use mine all the time!

Best form of marketing?

Christie: I've been doing some blogging, but Instagram has been very powerful and helpful for us. We weren't in the greatest spot at Atlanta Market and would have been missed by so many if we had not put our location on all of our Instagram posts. So many people told us they only came to that side of the building because they saw our posts and knew we were there!

What's next?

Mary: Next, we're off to High Point Market in April! We're looking forward to showing there, meeting new customers, and debuting some new products. Come by and see us if you're planning to attend -- we'd love to meet you!

Like A Pro: World Traveler

Chloe Johnston loves fashion and travel. So she decided to combine the two to create the Chloe Johnston brand. They provide customized city tours ranging from New York City to Paris. We don't want any Piqued PR lovers to look like tourists on their next trip, so we asked Chloe for a few expert travel tips!

Hydrate

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Be sure to drink plenty of water the day before travel as well as the day of. Hydration will help with fatigue, jet lag, and making your skin look radiant.

Pack light

Remember you will be shopping wherever you go. Bring a few key pieces that can easily be mixed and matched. Adding scarves and statement jewelry to simple ensembles help to create completely different looks. For fall/winter, my jacket is key! I always bring something thats warm, waterproof, and chic. It's the first thing everyone sees after all!

Try new things

Immerse yourself in the culture. Keep an open mind and always try new things. It’s not only what you pack, it’s what you bring back!

Throw Some Confetti

I recently stumbled upon The Confetti Bar through Instagram (don't you love social media) and am quite obsessed. Who doesn't love a party and an excuse to throw pretty little bits of sparkles? Not only are these fun to order for an event but I'd love to send a package of confetti to a friend as a just because gift. What a fun surprise that would be to open!

But what I might enjoy even more is their new prints. They feature confetti cereal, ice cream and cupcakes! All my favorite food groups, and just how I like them!

The Look of Cool

Truth be told, I didn't jump onto the wedge sneaker trend yet. Actually, I still am not 100% certain that I ever will. Don't get me wrong I think it's a cool look, I've just never classified my style as well, "cool". Maybe if wedged sneakers came in pink gingham with monograms... jk that would be horrifying!

In all seriousness though, I do love this casual look. It says, "I'm chic" without saying "I'm uncomfortable". Wouldn't you agree?

Budget Babe

I have three babies, furbabies that is. Just like any mother I'm crazy about my kids and spoil them endlessly. Call me a dog lady but these little finds have me smitten. Between bright colors, preppy silhouettes and chic decor it's easy to go dog-on overboard.

The New Workout

I'm not five years old but one of my favorite movies is Despicable Me and one of my favorite scenes from the movie is when Vector explains to Agnes that his tracksuit is for working out and not pajamas. Well, lately in any of my free time I've been working around my new house. You can say I've been living in comfy gym clothes that sorta resemble pjs. After all, housework is quite physical, it's my new workout.

Here's what I plan to get my new "workout" on in. Obviously,  pink included.

Business Babe

What girl doesn't love a handbag? After years of the "it" bag it's refreshing to discover a newcomer known for understated styles that don't have a million logos slapped all over them, instead a chic tassel. I interviewed Kelsea of K.Slademade about her bags and business. Here's the scoop...

When and why did you decide to create your brand?
I knew that if I didn’t pursue my dream, I would spend the rest of my life helping someone else make theirs a reality.  I believe in being bold even if those around you don’t agree with what your doing.  We only get one life, make it count.

What is your background in and how did this help prepare you in regards to your business?
The biggest influence in my life has been my parents.  I come from a very creative family.  My father is an artist and a musician.   My mother is the most brilliant woman I know.  The combination of the two has prepared me for all aspects of my business, the good, the bad and the awesome.

What do you believe sets your brand apart from competitors?
K.slademade offer timeless, simplistic, classic handbags that are made in the USA.  That combination is what we thrive on and what makes our brand unique.

What do you consider your greatest success?
Pursuing my dream of designing and owning my own business, while having a glass half full attitude in a glass half empty world.

What is your social media outlet of choice and why?
I have a love hate relationship with Social Media.  Instagram is my go to and is the perfect way to stay in touch with my lovers and friends.  While I love Social Media I some how mange to waste I ton of time scrolling, double taping, filtering, following…you get the idea! ;)

Thanks Kelsea, loved learning more about you & your brand! Check out K. Slademade

Intern Erin- Flower Power

The trend taking over the fashion world has to be Flowers! As an avid shopper I have noticed in all my favorite stores adorable flower accessories and clothing! I have to say my favorites have to be any the fun colored flower jewelry. However, the power of the flower doesn’t stop there, I will definitely be adding sandals and tech accessories following the floral trend to my wardrobe. Nothing says girly, fun, fashion than a gorgeous flower!

Hi, My name is Patricia and I'm addicted to pineapple motifs. True confession right there, but the first step is admitting you have a problem, right? So I think my pineapple obsession truly began years ago while visiting my family in SC. Southerners love them some pineapples!

Over the years my obsession has grown and just last weekend I went to Target and spotted the Nate Berkus pineapple basket and jar. I was a good girl and left with just the basket. Well, actually I was a bad girl because I went back for the jar yesterday... Are you pineapple crazed too?

Empire State of Mind

Not to sound like a tourist tee shirt but I love New York. Don't you? When I found this Tibi skirt I was immediately drawn to it. There's something about the NY hustle that is so powerful and this skirt is a fun take on that Empire state of mind.

I've paired it with a shell from Vince. I swear by them and wear them year round under other pieces or just on their own. You need one in your closet, it's a great foundation. I'm still on the hunt for some ankle strap heels but these just may do. Have you found a great pair yet? If so, let me know.

Intern Erin- Black & White with a Twist

One of my favorite things about fashion is that there are no rules! You can mix and match different styles to find the perfect outfit! I think it is so much fun to pair classic pieces with fun and daring accessories! By pairing simple black and white classic pieces with bright fun bright colors you can give one of your favorite black and white outfits a completely new look! Don’t be afraid to pair your black and white look with vibrant and crazy colors. Play with color this season by adding a twist to your classic black and white outfits!

You know that reflection of light on the surface of water? Those shades of blue are my favorite, I wish I could capture it but no picture really does it justice. These little bits of bright blue remind me of that image, especially the earrings. And crisp white? There's nothing better in summer.

Take Charge Gladiator

T by Alexander WangKelly Wynne Tote, Stuart Weitzman Gladiator

Usually you'll find me in heels, or at least wedges. There's just something so empowering when your short about being able to put on a pair of heels and grow three to five inches. It makes you stand a little different and gives you some added confidence. But if there ever was a power sandal it would totally be these gladiators by Stuart Weitzman, I mean Kate Moss totally rocked them in the campaign.

Since these shoes are such a show stopped I'd keep the rest of my outfit pretty casual. Oh and have you seen Kelly Wynne's bags? She's a newcomer but I see great things in her future with classic bags like these!

Blogging Buds

I adore Sam of La Petite Pear. We started talking through Twitter months ago sharing a love for fashion and sweets. Whenever I'm craving some candy or ice cream (which is quite often) she totally supports it. One of my favorite parts about her blog is her "Fashionista in Flats" feature where she interviews other fashionistas and shares how they style flats. I've never seen so many flats look so chic! Fun fact, I was one of those fashionistas too. I just had to reach out to Sam to interview her on the blog.

Why did you start blogging?
I was actually blogging for three years before I decided to start fresh and focus on style. I've always loved to write and I was a journalism major, so for me, blogging has been a creative outlet. It's also an amazing way to connect with like-minded people who share my interests and passions.

How did you choose the name for your blog?
When I started my blog, I tried to think about what made me unique and what I could bring to the space. I'm on the shorter side, but I have curves, which is a pretty unique combination... and I thought Petite Pear had a nice ring to it.

What motivates you to keep blogging?
My deep-rooted love of style, a close group of girlfriends who are the most amazing cheerleaders and my biggest fans, and the desire to help people have as much fun with fashion as I do.

What are some qualities you believe a blogger needs to posses?
Persistence, drive and determination. Blogging is hard work, and in such a saturated space, you really have to do everything possible to go the extra mile and stand out. It's also important to stay true to yourself no matter what.

What do you consider your greatest success?
Balancing my blog, day job, social life and marriage is quite the challenge. So, any day that I manage to keep all those plates in the air is a success for me.

What's you social media outlet of choice and why?
Definitely Twitter (although Instagram is a close second). I love the conversational aspect of it, and it's amazing to see how well some brands are using the space to interact with their customers. Twitter chats are a lot of fun too!

Thanks Sam! I'm really missing those denim skirts too. Be sure to check out La Petite Pear

Intern Erin- Summer Sandals

One of my favorite things about summer is being able to wear sandals! My ultimate go to shoe for summer has to be the classic flip flop! However, this summer the wedges, gladiators, and slide on sandals have been so fashionable and trendy! I can’t get enough of fun colored wedges! Having a fabulous shoe collection of sandals is a definite must for your wardrobe!!!

Animals prints, there's a fine line between getting wild with classic prints and looking like a Real Housewife. I've recently been addicted to elephant prints and motifs, something about them is just so palm beach chic (even though there aren't actually elephants there). You get the point, so how do you get wild?

Business Babes

I'm an only child and have always loved being one but after talking with Bridget and Megan of Torregrossa I may ask for a sister for Christmas. The sisters have worked together to creat a luxury handbag brand that is coveted by many (myself included) and toted around by some of the most stylish celebs. Here's what the duo has to say...

When and why did you decide to start Torregrossa?
Torregrossa was founded in January 2010.  From the early 1920’s, our great grandmother, Lucia Mariani, owned and operated three dress factories called Lucy Frocks in Brooklyn, New York. In fact, the name, Lucy Frocks, has been incorporated by us, and will one day be a sister company to our primary label. She was an innovative businesswoman, who was well ahead of her time, and her life story, serves as a great inspiration. Her story was told to us as young girls, by our parents who have always encouraged us to pursue this life-long dream.

"It is our goal as designers, to maintain a fashion forward approach, without jeopardizing quality, style, and functionalism, just as our great grandmother did ninety years ago," says Megan.

What is your background in and how did this help prepare you in regards to your business?
Bridget’s background working in public relations, marketing and events and Megan’s background in design is a perfect combination for what our brand needs to grow to a successful company.

What do you believe sets your brand apart from competitors?
The Torregrossa collection bridges the gap between high-end designer labels and less expensive, mass produced labels, without neglecting quality and design.

What do you consider your greatest success?
We feel most successful when we see the average women wearing our bags and loving them!

When we received our coverage in publications such as WWD, Marie Claire, InStyle, Allure, People Style Watch, etc.

What is your social media outlet of choice and why?
We used Facebook, Twitter (@TorregrossaLtd) and Instgram. We love them all!

We also love doing videos so we can speak with our customers/fan directly!

What is your favorite part about working alongside your sister?
The best part about working together is that we both believe in each other and we are both extremely passionate about creating beautiful products that make women happy. The mutual love and respect we have for one another allows our partnership to flourish and continue to grow.  We also know everything about each other so we know how one another will deal with a crisis or a situation. We know which one of us would be better equipped to handle certain situations. We balance each other out!

As sisters we are always honest with each other and have only our brands best interest in mind when we make any decision together.

Be sure to check out Torregrossa for your luxe bag fix.  I know I'm dying to get my hands on the Stella, in what else besides the color of the year, emerald!
